A pioneering CSZ project: the LUNA lunar simulation facility in Cologne

On September 25, 2024, the LUNA lunar simulation facility was opened in Cologne-Porz – an important milestone in the history of space travel. In close cooperation with the European Space Agency (ESA) and the German Aerospace Center (DLR), this modern training and test facility was created to prepare astronauts for future space missions under almost real lunar conditions.

Lunar simulation and technical innovations
The LUNA facility extends over 700 square meters and offers a self-supporting, air-conditioned hall in which astronauts can train scientific experiments and technical processes that are important for their missions. The floor is covered with regolith – a special mineral mixture that resembles lunar sand. In addition, specific lighting conditions simulate the atmosphere of the moon. The influence of lunar dust on equipment and spacesuits is tested in specially equipped dust chambers.
Reproduced craters and rocks create an authentic lunar landscape. A technical highlight of the facility is the planned Gravity Offload System, which simulates the reduced lunar gravity by cushioning the astronauts to one-sixth of their body weight.

A strong signal for the future of space travel
The opening of the LUNA facility attracted high-caliber representatives from politics and science. Minister President Hendrik Wüst emphasized the technological importance of this facility. The Minister for Economic Affairs, Industry, Climate Protection and Energy, Mona Neubaur, emphasized Germany’s role as a pioneer in space technology. Astronauts Alexander Gerst and Dr. Matthias Maurer also praised the center’s first-class training facilities and comprehensive equipment. The guests were given an impressive demonstration and gained an insight into future training procedures.

CSZ: Key role for innovative space infrastructure
As general planner, CSZ played a central role in the preparation and implementation of this project. The structural design, technical equipment, traffic planning, building physics and fire protection were developed in-house. The architecture was created in collaboration with the partner Hirschmüller und Schmidt.

The result is a futuristic building whose entrance design is reminiscent of a rising moon – a powerful symbol for looking to the future. On the outside, the LUNA hall presents itself as a white cube, while the interior offers a dark, impressive space that authentically simulates the lunar environment.

The LUNA facility is more than just a training center; it stands for scientific progress and international cooperation in space travel. For CSZ and its partners, the completion of this unique project marks a significant achievement and a small contribution to the success of future lunar missions.

CSZ management workshop 2024 in Weilburg: New impulses in a historic setting

From June 19 to 21, 2024, the management teams of all CSZ companies met in the former residence town of Weilburg for a management workshop. The workshop, initiated by Frank Ottenschläger and professionally led by Doris Brenner as a management developer, coach and moderator, was dedicated this year to the topic of “Developing the CSZ management culture”.

Highlights included a sociable dinner with the German national team’s European Championship group match and an insightful town hall meeting by Christoph Cornelius, who highlighted the impressive development of CSZ and current trends in digitalization and marketing. Sascha Millich presented his visionary strategy for the further development and internationalization of CSZ. The workshop focused in particular on the topic of “leadership” and ended with a convivial round of skittles.

At the beginning of September, CSZ launched its first management dialog – a monthly online meeting for effective internal coordination and the exchange of best practices, whose needs were identified during the workshop.

CSZ celebrates the launch of its new branch in Munich

On September 1, 2024, CSZ Ingenieurconsult GmbH & Co. KG and CSZ Brandschutz GmbH opened their new branch office in Munich and moved into their first rooms in the BKS & Partner architectural office. Ludwigs-Tempel receives honorary award at the Hessian Monument Preservation Prize 2024

The Honorary Award of the Hessian Monument Protection Prize 2024 was awarded to the associations Ehrenamt für Darmstadt e.V., Stadtbild Deutschland e.V. (OV Darmstadt) and the Rotary Club Darmstadt. In close cooperation with CSZ Ingenieurconsult GmbH & Co. KG and the volunteer structural engineer and site manager Dipl.-Ing. Pister, these dedicated groups have impressively reconstructed and rebuilt the Ludwigs-Tempel, which was willfully destroyed in 1995.

The pavilion donated by Valentin Justus Noack in 1877, once a filigree masterpiece, was revived in 2020 on the initiative of the associations. An appeal for donations and generous support from citizens, foundations and companies made the successful reconstruction and construction in the fall of 2023 possible.

The restoration included the restoration of the sandstone floor slab, the floor design, the cast steel supporting structure, the wooden roof and the decorative spire. Missing and damaged parts of the temple were precisely recreated according to historical models. Today, the Ludwigs-Tempel once again stands as an impressive testimony to the community’s commitment and dedication to the preservation of historical monuments.

CSZ Ingenieurconsult is proud of Dipl.-Ing. Pister’s commitment and congratulates the winners on this well-deserved award.

CSZ: Ground-breaking ceremony for the Einhausen community center – Sustainable new building begins

The ground-breaking ceremony for the new Einhausen community center took place on August 15. A modern center for sport, culture and community is being built at Friedensstraße 3 and is dedicated to cohesion and sustainable development. CSZ is responsible for the statics and building physics and is supporting 1100Architects to create a lively, economical and sustainable center. The community center impresses with its barrier-free design and contemporary architecture as well as its sustainable approach. The concrete mass was reduced through the use of displacement bodies. A photovoltaic system on the green roof and modern building technology ensure high energy efficiency and reduce the ecological footprint. In addition, rainwater is used to irrigate the green areas, which further strengthens the environmental friendliness of the project. CSZ is proud to support this important community project and looks forward to accompanying the community of Einhausen on the road to completion.

Sustainable bridge renovation – a CSZ practical example

Responsibility in action
Climate change is one of the most pressing challenges of our time. CSZ takes this responsibility seriously and focuses on innovative, sustainable solutions. In this article, we present an outstanding example of our work: the comprehensive renovation of a bridge, which we managed from planning to implementation.

Project overview: from vision to reality
The bridge has been closed for a thorough renovation since mid-March 2024. Our planning objective is to significantly extend its service life. The road surface and waterproofing will be renewed with the aim of restoring the road safety and durability of the components. The primary damaging effect of de-icing salts is essentially caused by a defective seal. Accordingly, the level of care required for this renovation work is particularly high and so are our monitoring activities as part of service phase 8 of the HOAI. The same procedure is planned for the wearing parts of the bridge deck.

Once the areas damaged due to years of chloride ingress into the concrete have been repaired, a surface protection system is applied to the bridge caps to keep de-icing salts away from the concrete structure. The roadway transition structure will be professionally repaired.

The importance of sustainable bridge renovation: future-proof solutions
Sustainable bridge renovation is essential to counteract the ageing and loss of function of infrastructure structures. By reusing existing structures, we conserve resources and reduce the ecological footprint. Innovative measures improve energy efficiency, reduce operating costs and extend the service life of the bridge. The use of recycled materials and modern technologies ensures that the investment is future-proof.

This project illustrates CSZ’s commitment to sustainable infrastructure and responsible urban development. Through precise renovation measures and innovative approaches, we make an important contribution to the preservation and improvement of existing structures – for the present and future generations.
