A lot can change in a year: new specialist topics, real project experience, and lots of “aha” moments. That’s exactly what our intern Mislina Kaynak experienced in building physics, successfully completing her one-year mandatory internship.

At the heart of building physics – involved from the very beginning
Ms. Kaynak contributed to our CSZ projects with great commitment, a noticeable enthusiasm for learning, and a keen sense of building physics. With her positive attitude, she was also a valuable addition to the entire team.

Real challenges. Sustainable solutions: CSZ supports students at the Schulich School of Engineering, University of Calgary

This year, CSZ Consulting Engineers Inc. is proud to support two international capstone projects at the Schulich School of Engineering, University of Calgary. The projects are based on real construction projects but have been adapted for educational purposes. Students explore what it means to design sustainably in real-world structural engineering projects.

Vocational School | Traunstein, Germany
A multi-story educational building serves as the starting point for a student design project. The students develop a lightweight concrete structure using UNIDOME voided slab technology. They engage in the design process and investigate the impacts of using such systems (CO₂ reduction, material savings) within architectural and structural constraints.

Kindergarten | Groß-Umstadt, Germany
A two-story kindergarten serves as the basis for a student timber-composite project. The students design a timber-composite structure, leveraging the advantages of different structural materials. They explore the architectural implications of their design and work within given constraints to develop a solution that is efficient and constructible.

CSZ receives contract for structural engineering of former church in Manheim-Alt

We are proud to be contributing to structural change in the Rhineland mining region. Existing buildings and heritage projects in particular demonstrate what sustainable construction means to us in concrete terms: preserving rather than replacing, intelligently developing existing structures—and thus conserving resources, energy, and history in equal measure. In Manheim-Alt, sustainability is even directly visible: the phase-out of coal is creating space for a listed building to be given a new future as a place that fosters identity, rather than disappearing.

St. Albanus in Manheim-Alt: Review and outlook
Between 1898 and 1900, the Roman Catholic parish church of St. Albanus and Leonhardus was built in the Manheim-Alt district of Kerpen—at that time, no one could have imagined that one day it would stand on the shore of Germany’s second-largest lake.

Historical heritage meets structural change
Following its deconsecration in 2019, the listed church is set to become the centerpiece of a cultural and event park. It combines history, architecture, and new uses to create a vibrant meeting place.

A versatile cultural venue is created
A venue for exhibitions, events, and leisure activities is being created around the church, complemented by pioneering buildings on the future Hambach Loop. The adjacent open-cast mine will be closed by around 2030 and then flooded with water from the Rhine; it is expected to be completely filled by 2070.

A model project for engineering performance and structural change
Planning is being carried out in close cooperation with NRW.URBAN Service GmbH, NEULAND HAMBACH GmbH, Kolpingstadt Kerpen, BERDI Planung GmbH, and Achenbach & Partner Ingenieurgesellschaft mbH. The project combines regional history, industrial culture, and contemporary uses in a place that brings encounters and culture to life. CSZ is supporting this transformation process with technical expertise and sustainable solutions. The structural design is carried out by our team in Münster. The site is becoming a visible cultural anchor beyond the region – an example of how engineering and structural change can go hand in hand.

CSZ Structural Design and Fire Protection: First tenants move into the Jaminpark WA7 residential quarte

New living space, modern construction, short construction times – the Jaminpark WA7 residential complex in the south of Erlangen is ready for its first residents. From February 2026, tenants will move into the modern apartments, which combine high living comfort with sustainable construction.

Modern living meets innovative structural design
WA7 consists of three residential buildings with two separate underground parking garages. The buildings are constructed using a hybrid timber construction method and combine prefabricated reinforced concrete hollow core slabs, solid wood walls, and reinforced concrete cores. The underground garage is designed as a waterproof construction.
Thanks to the high degree of prefabrication of the building elements—solid wood walls, prefabricated ceilings, prefabricated stairs—the construction time was significantly reduced without compromising on quality or safety. Photovoltaic systems and heat pumps on the roof provide sustainable energy.

CSZ services with depth
On behalf of the client DAWONIA Franken GmbH and in cooperation with the client B&O Wohnungswirtschaft GmbH, CSZ provided the following services:
✅ Structural design in accordance with HOAI 2021 (§51, HZ III, service phases 1–6)
✅ Structural fire protection
✅ Excavation and shoring planning (phases 1–3)
✅ Fire protection planning according to AHO (phases 1–4)
This integrative planning ensures the stability, safety, and efficiency of the project and makes Jaminpark WA7 a showcase project for modern residential neighborhoods.
