Sustainable bridge renovation – a CSZ practical example

Responsibility in action
Climate change is one of the most pressing challenges of our time. CSZ takes this responsibility seriously and focuses on innovative, sustainable solutions. In this article, we present an outstanding example of our work: the comprehensive renovation of a bridge, which we managed from planning to implementation.

Project overview: from vision to reality
The bridge has been closed for a thorough renovation since mid-March 2024. Our planning objective is to significantly extend its service life. The road surface and waterproofing will be renewed with the aim of restoring the road safety and durability of the components. The primary damaging effect of de-icing salts is essentially caused by a defective seal. Accordingly, the level of care required for this renovation work is particularly high and so are our monitoring activities as part of service phase 8 of the HOAI. The same procedure is planned for the wearing parts of the bridge deck.

Once the areas damaged due to years of chloride ingress into the concrete have been repaired, a surface protection system is applied to the bridge caps to keep de-icing salts away from the concrete structure. The roadway transition structure will be professionally repaired.

The importance of sustainable bridge renovation: future-proof solutions
Sustainable bridge renovation is essential to counteract the ageing and loss of function of infrastructure structures. By reusing existing structures, we conserve resources and reduce the ecological footprint. Innovative measures improve energy efficiency, reduce operating costs and extend the service life of the bridge. The use of recycled materials and modern technologies ensures that the investment is future-proof.

This project illustrates CSZ’s commitment to sustainable infrastructure and responsible urban development. Through precise renovation measures and innovative approaches, we make an important contribution to the preservation and improvement of existing structures – for the present and future generations.

150 years of MAIV Darmstadt – A celebration of architects and engineers

In June, the Middle Rhine Architects’ and Engineers’ Association Darmstadt (MAIV Darmstadt) celebrated its 150th anniversary with a glittering gala in the magnificent Orangery in Darmstadt. Around 120 guests accepted the invitation and enjoyed an interesting and entertaining evening.

CSZ supported the event as a sponsor and Gülcan Subasi (Managing Director of CSZ Ingenieurconsult Bauphysik GmbH & Co. KG) and Christoph Cornelius (Managing Partner of the CSZ Group), who has been a member of the MAIV Darmstadt board for many years and is committed to promoting cooperation between architects and engineers, were also present.

The presentations by Nicolaus Heiss on “The architects of the MAIV and their buildings” and by Prof. Dr.-Ing. Karsten Tichelmann on the topic of “What and how will we build tomorrow?” spanned a successful arc from the past to the future. They stimulated discussion and illustrated how diverse, exciting and thrilling building culture can be.

CSZtimejourney – MDR headquarters in Leipzig

In the late 1990s, Leipzig was enriched by a major construction project: the MDR headquarters. On the former slaughterhouse site, an archit ectural masterpiece was created that set new standards for media centers. This project is a prime example of successful teamwork between visionaries and engineers, with CSZ playing a central role.

Challenges mastered, visions realized: the glass façade as an architectural highlight

The construction of the MDR headquarters is a story of ambitious visions and impressive engineering skills. The architects Gondesen, Piachnow and Staack (GPS) and Struhk & Partner developed a creative concept, while CSZ mastered the technical challenges. The impressive glass façade, which gives the building its open and transparent appearance, is particularly noteworthy. The huge glass façade with surrounding frames was designed to resemble a curved television screen. CSZ developed innovative solutions for stability and energy efficiency and successfully overcame the difficult ground conditions with tailor-made foundations and stabilization techniques. Another special feature was monument protection: some of the existing buildings of the abattoir had cast-iron columns, which had to meet F90 fire protection requirements from then on. To achieve this, their interior was filled with concrete. The shell of these listed buildings was also preserved. The opening ceremony on July 13, 2000, at which Prof. Dr. Udo Reiter welcomed the guests and an impressive firework display crowned the evening, marked the completion of this pioneering project.

A legacy of engineering: the MDR headquarters as a cultural landmark

Today, the MDR headquarters is more than just a modern office building; it is an important cultural center and a proud landmark of Leipzig. As a vibrant center of the media landscape, the building stands for the successful collaboration of architects and engineers who together have created an outstanding masterpiece. CSZ is proud of its contribution to this functional and aesthetically impressive project.

CSZ-Kicker-Tournament 2024 – A celebration of team spirit

The CSZ-Kicker-Tournament 2024 has come to a successful conclusion and we can look back on an exciting event. The final on July 17 was the highlight of the tournament. Christoph Schwinn and Christoph Schulze competed against each other in the thrilling final. After intense matches, Christoph Schwinn was able to secure the title. Congratulations to him for this well-deserved victory!
The European Championship-style tournament offered plenty of thrills from the group stage to the final. A total of 32 colleagues competed in 8 groups of 4 players. The expansion to 32 participants allowed for greater diversity and increased the excitement.
The enthusiastic participation and sporting atmosphere made the event a great success. It showed impressively how important team spirit and cohesion are at CSZ. It was great to see colleagues coming together in a friendly atmosphere to compete in exciting matches and have a laugh together.
A big thank you to all participants for their enthusiasm and commitment. Your commitment made the table football tournament unforgettable. We look forward to the next event and to seeing you there again!

CSZ Summer Party 2024: A successful day of celebration and enjoyment

Our summer party on July 5, 2024 in the Pulvermühle beer garden in Darmstadt was a complete success! In glorious weather, the CSZ team had the opportunity to review the past year and share exciting news.
In their opening speech, Ms. Subasi and Mr. Ottenschläger thanked everyone for their outstanding work over the past year. The colorful program offered fun for young and old: bouncy castle, face painting, balloon animals and a live stream of the Germany match of the European Football Championship. Despite the defeat of the soccer team, the atmosphere remained relaxed. The participants showed great skill and enthusiasm, especially when it came to nailing.
A big thank you to everyone who made this event possible and to the Pulvermühle team for the excellent hospitality. We look forward to many more successful years together. Looking forward to a great team spirit!
